how things changed in Singapore

Posted on June 02, 2007 by dorisch

Well, it’s been 6 years since I packed my bags and move to Kuala Lumpur.

Though I travel home every now and then, it’s hard to keep myself abreast with the rapid changes in this fast moving city.

Over the years, I have noticed not just changes in property developments but people’s lifestyle and behaviour patterns. This is just part and parcel of an affluent and urban city.About 20 years ago, I used to have breaky at this popular coffee stall in ‘Old Market’ along Shenton Way. I remembered this tall, skinny, tanned-skin man that served me my butter/kaya toast. I knew him as Ya Kun cos that was the name of the stall.

During my last trip back, I noticed Ya Kun in a different light in Toa Payoh Central. The Ya Kun today is a far cry from the Ya Kun 20 years ago. Yet, it still serves the same yummy toast. Nothing more, nothing less.

Today, Ya Kun is in every nook and corner of Singapore since it began its franchise directions few years ago.

Who would have thought that a home-grown business will be what it is today?
